University & College Ministry

While Redeemer exists to celebrate the gospel of Jesus in university Knoxville, we do not have our own unique College or University ministry. Our primary way of serving the University is to be the Church for many faculty, staff and students.

Worship

We believe regular, gathered worship is a large part of a person’s life in Christ, and this is no less for those who are part of the University. Because we are in the heart of the Fort Sander’s neighborhood and right next door to the UT campus, we strive to be a people of worship for all who are part of the University of Tennessee. We are also a church community that welcomes those who are part of other, nearby college and university campuses (such as: Carson Newman University, Johnson Bible College and Pellissippi State). While we have some students who attend our 9AM service, the 11AM sees a large student presence each week during the semester.

Community

We have many faculty, staff and graduate students who take part in the community life of our congregation: in a Men’s or Women’s small group study or in a Community group. We love and encourage University folks, despite busy lives and schedules, to make space for Christian community. Its the second most important part of our growth in grace. Its a powerful place where we learn how to live the Christian life.

Many of our under-graduate students, find their primary place of community while at college in a collegiate small group. So Redeemer has not tried to replace or compete with these campus ministries, but to support and come alongside them.

Our primary campus partnerships:

  • UTK RUF (Reformed University Fellowship) holds its Large Group meeting each Tuesday during the semester at 7:30pm in AMB 210, next to Neyland Stadium. For more information, you can email RUF campus minister Matt Howell or you can visit their website.
  • RUF-I (Reformed University Fellowship International) — For more information or to get involved through participating or serving in the UT International community, please email RUF campus minister Lee Leadbetter.
  • RUF (MCF) at Carson-Newman meets on Mondays, beginning 9pm at First Pres Jeff City (caddy-corner from Alumni Residence Hall). You can find them on Facebook or email RUF campus minister Cam Smith for more information.

Other formal campus ministry partnerships that we support and recommend:

  • Bridges International is the International Student ministry of CRU. If you are an international student looking to connect with a campus ministry or someone who is interested in serving International students, please email Michael Henderson, Bridges International staff at UTK or visit their Facebook page.

Service

College is also a great time to experience new challenges and serve in unique ways. We invite and encourage students to pursue service opportunities with Redeemer. This could be serving on Sunday with one of our teams that make worship happen (such as, Music, Sound, Sacraments, Operations) or serving our families and children through our Children’s or Youth ministries. Many University folks love serving those in the urban center who are materially as well as spiritually in need by volunteering with Food In The Fort, our food pantry.

If you are are connected with a University or college campus as faculty, staff or a student, we’d love to hear from you. Consider connecting with us by emailing for more information about Redeemer and the University.
